Battle Aces: Bulwark

The Art of Iteration: Concept Designing the Bulwark

When designing a unit, it can be tempting to just do one drawing and call it finished. But as concept artists, it's our job to explore several different visual design solutions, see which elements we can push, and pick the solution that best solves the visual goals of the game design team. With the Bulwark we needed a large and visually impressive tier 3 unit that moved very slow and dealt lots of damage, so we explored several different options to make it feel large, slow, and heavily armed. Sometimes to make something appear large and imposing, you can use one very large shape and adorn it with several very small details to make it appear large with the contrast between the details against the main body shape. With this design the large circular form conveys the mass of the ship, and then the smaller details suggest some directionality, functionality and weaponry.
